Louis Prima - When You’re Smiling / C’è La Luna / Zooma Zooma / Oh Marie
if you’re having a bad day, my advise is to try singing along at the “zooma zooma” part… your mood is likely to improve considerably…
I’m sorry it didn’t work for Keely….
TOM WAITS- Cementery Polka /motion graphics.
interesting visual interpretation
THELONIOUS MONK - BLUE MONK
Tishomingo Blues…
on the Royal Street by Meschiya Lake and her little big horns.
lovely performance.
Don’t quite understand why someone would rather be in Tishomingo than in New Orleans, but then again, I’ve never been to Tishomingo….
Do Your Duty - Tuba skinny
Love the lyrics but sometimes hints are not good enough…
If I call three times a day, baby,
Come and drive my blues away;
When you come be ready to play,
Do your duty!
If you want to have some luck,
Give your baby your last buck.
Don't come quackin' like a duck,
Do your duty!
I heard you say you didn't love me, baby,
Yesterday at Mrs Brown's,
I don't believe a word she said,
She's the lying-est woman in town, oh babe!
When I need attention at home,
I'll just call you on the telephone;
Come yourself, don't send your friend Jones,
Do your duty!
If my radiator gets too hot,
Cool it of in a lotsa spot,
Give me all the service you've got
Do your duty!
If you don't know what it's all about,
Don't stand around my house and pout;
Do you catch your mama kippin' out?
Do your duty!
As you make your own bad heart,
That's the way o' life!
You bunk out, I'm sleepin' by myself,
You're too dumb to realise, oh babe!
I'm not tryin' to make you feel blue,
I'm not satisfied with the way that you do;
I've got to help you find somebody to
Do your duty!

Thursday’s Tune 4/14/11
“The Other Woman (Live)” by Nina Simone, from the 2008 box set To Be Free: The Nina Simone Story.
Well.
What is there to say about Nina Simone that hasn’t already been said? I don’t really think you need me to try to convince you to listen to her, you should be listening to her already. But here’s what I enjoy the most about her music… it’s a total mixed bag. And I mean that in the best possible way. You never really know what you’re going to get from her, and that’s what makes her so exciting. Sure, she covers the same songs over and over again but each one is just a wee bit different from the one she did before.
This song first appeared on Nina’s 1959 live album Nina Simone at Town Hall and it went on to be a semi-standard of hers. What makes this version different from others you may have heard is all the heart-wrenching, slow-burn emotion that Ms. Simone pours into it. This haunting, as-bare-bones-as-you-can-get version clocks in at nearly twice as long as some of the more widely played renditions of this song.
Going back to the mixed bag theme, the first 15 times I heard this song, I imagined Nina singing from the perspective of the wronged woman. The 16 times I listened to it after that, it dawned on me that Nina could actually be signing from the perspective of the Other Woman herself. Which made me appreciate the song in an entirely different way. Or maybe I’m just reading waaaaaaaay too much into it. Listen for yourself and let me know what you think.
Enjoy.
